The Nine Forms of Navdurga: Names, Significance, and Benefits

The Nine Forms of Navdurga: Names, Significance, and Benefits

Every day becomes auspicious as we pray and offer gratitude to the Divine Mother, Ma Durga. However, there are certain periods of the year when Devi Ma’s worship offers greater spiritual benefits. Every year, four Navratris are observed — two Gupt Navratris, Chaitra Navratri, and Sharad Navratri.

During these nine powerful days, devotees worship a specific form of Goddess Durga each day to receive her blessings and grace.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the major Navratri periods this year.

Initially, Lord Brahma sought to populate the universe and created the Prajapatis, Manus, and Rishis for this purpose. Among them, Daksh, a distinguished Prajapati, played an important role. With his devotion and penance, he pleased Ma Adi Shakti, who gave him the blessing that she would be born as his daughter. As a result of this boon, Goddess Sati manifested on earth.

Nav Durga Sadhana invokes the blessings of the Divine Mother, filling devotees' lives with courage and strength. It offers an opportunity to purify oneself and progress on the spiritual path.

Frequently Asked Questions

During Navratri and Devi Sadhana, many questions may arise in the mind of a Sadhak. We are sharing some common questions and their answers below.

How many times can we eat during Navratri fast?
People observe the Navratri fast in various ways:

Nirjala Fast: Neither food nor water is taken.

Phalahar Fast: Only fruits and permitted sattvic foods are eaten.

One-time Meal Fast: Only one meal is eaten during the day.

Navratri fasting is not just about avoiding food; it is also a way to control the senses. Stay away from negative thoughts, and seek refuge in the Divine Mother. Fasting or Upvaas is the practice of staying close to one’s deity and contemplating them.

What is not allowed during Navratri?

During the nine days of Navratri, fasting and spiritual practices done with devotion and discipline not only help devotees receive the blessings of Durga, but also bring new energy and positivity into their lives. During Navratri, keep the following things in mind:

  • Remain calm and composed.
  • Stay away from negative thoughts.
  • Use truthful, sweet, and mindful speech.
  • Observe silence or speak only as much as necessary.

Which color is considered the most auspicious for Devi Sadhana and Puja during Navratri?

Red is considered the most auspicious colour for Devi puja or sadhana. Colors have a deep impact on human consciousness; red symbolises energy and life force. It stands for enthusiasm, vitality, courage, and strength. The Primordial Feminine energy (Ma Adi Shakti) is a dynamic force that drives creation and evolution. She is vibrant, so Devi Ma is represented in red. Red also symbolises the sacred fire that destroys evil and invokes protective energy. In the Dhyan Shlok and other verses of the Lalita Sahasranaam Stotram, the Divine Mother’s form has been visualised in red hue. Many things associated with her are red in colour.

Pranam Swamiji, please advise when will be the Ashtami. Some people says one day has increased this time so Ashtami will be on 30th not on 29th. This is so confusing I never understand this how can a day be added. Thank you!
