Ma Shailaputri’s Divine Form and its Meaning
Who is She?
Born in the pristine peaks of the Himalayas, Shailaputri means the daughter (putri) of the mountain (Shail), King Himvan. She is also known as Parvati, the daughter of Parvatraj (another name for the King of the Mountains). Born among the golden peaks of the Himalayas, she is also called Hemavati (The Golden One) and Bhavani (consort of Bhava, another name for Lord Shiv).

Visualising Ma Shailaputri’s Beautiful Form
Devi Shailaputri’s visualisation is a powerful spiritual practice. Meditate on her beautiful form by focusing on the following aspects:
She is a radiant Goddess seated on the majestic bull, Nandi.
- Draped in a White Saree: Her attire symbolises purity and serenity, tinged with a pink hue reflecting her boundless love.
- Holding the Sacred Symbols:
- A trident (Trishul) in her right hand, representing power, protection, and the balance of creation, preservation, and destruction.
- A lotus in her left hand, signifying spiritual awakening and divine beauty.
- Crescent Moon on her Forehead: Radiating divine wisdom and charm.
- Loving Smile: Filling devotees’ hearts with warmth, joy, and unwavering devotion.
Ma Shailaputri: Rise of the Kundalini
Devi Shailaputri is born in the mountains, closer to life-giving rivers and the earth itself. She is an absolute manifestation of the Earth element, the densest physical form. Ruling over the root chakra (the Muladhara), the first energy centre among the seven main Yogic chakras, Ma Shailpautri represents the Bhumi Tattva. Her energy can only travel upwards from here. Hence, her worship is the starting point of a Sadhak’s spiritual journey.
A devotee’s goal is to reach the highest level of spiritual growth and experience the blissful state of Sat-Chit-Anand (Truth, consciousness, bliss). Undoubtedly, Ma Shailaputri is the Kundalini (the dormant Primordial energy) seated at the base of your spine to be awakened within the self.
Benefits of Worshipping Ma Shailaputri?
All nine forms of Nav Durga are incredibly powerful and are capable of bestowing immense blessings upon the worshipper. Since Devi Shailaputri’s form is so closely connected to the Earth element, her worship activates and heightens the awareness and emotional fitness needed for the ease of living in the world.
🌸She gives us the courage to distinguish right from wrong and to speak up for ourselves.
🌸Chanting her mantras blesses the Sadhak with extraordinary mental stability and the strength to face life's challenges.
🌸She blesses us with the ability to make quick and appropriate decisions, moving forward in life with childlike faith, innocence, and simplicity.
🌸She blesses us with the conviction to remain grounded and feel safe in our environment.
🌸She heightens in us the awareness to choose the right actions needed for success in life.
🌸She is both a Shikshak (teacher) who guides her devotees toward the righteous path and a Rakshak (protector), who shields them from harm.
Tantric invocation of Ma Shailaputri
Ma Shailaputri Tantric invocation is done with these names:
Mahavidya, Jaya, and Chandika.
One of the nine Tantric forms of Devi is invoked as Chandi as per the Durga Tantra and Vamkeshvara Tantra. The name ‘Chandi,’ derived from the Sanskrit word 'Chand', means to tear apart. She tears apart our thoughts that feed the ego and deviate us from the path of Dharma.
Offer your sincere prayers to Devi Chandika, who appears in the lives of her devotees and leads them to inner peace and happiness.
May the grace of Ma Shailaputri descend upon you!
