What is the significance of Lalita Sahasranama?

Lalita Sahasranama is a collection of a thousand names of Ma Lalita. Each name describes her divine attributes and acts as a powerful mantra. This blog post will explain the significance of Lalita Sahasranama in spiritual practice.

Have you noticed how readily a mother responds to her child's cries? If she senses that her child is in pain, she abandons all work and rushes to him/her. Similarly, when a seeker calls Mother Divine with faith and devotion, the prayer indeed reaches her.

The names in the Lalita Sahasranama are utterances of love and devotion—the many different ways of describing and calling Mother Divine. Each name helps the seeker visualise the Goddess and establish a deeper bond with her.

Found in the Brahmanda Purana, Lalita Sahasranama Stotram is a dialogue between Hayagriva (an incarnation of Sri Vishnu) and the great sage Agastya. It contains the secrets of the creation and the mystical knowledge of Sri Vidya Tantra. Performing yagna with the powerful Lalita Sahasranama can help a person progress on the path of meditation, spiritual practice and self realisation.

Beautiful Descriptions Bring Deeper Connection

Each name in the Lalita Sahasranama is an exquisite description of Mother Divine, her form (Sakar) and formless (Nirakar) aspects. When the Sadhakas understand these attributes, they can connect with Devi Ma and deepen their practice. For example, the Stotram begins with the Dhyana Shloka— a vivid physical description of Ma Lalita.

 ‘Sinduraruna vigraham, trinayanam, manikya moulisphurat’

The Vagadevis tell us that Ma Lalita’s body glows vermillion-red (Sinduraruna Vigraham). She is the one with three eyes—Trinayana— and sports a crown of rubies studded with a crescent moon (Manikya mouli sphurat).

With gradual practice, Lalita Sahasranama also helps the Sadhaka realise Devi Ma’s formless aspect. On completing this journey—from form to formless— the seeker’s fears melt away. He/she feels a surge of energy and a constant flow of positivity.

A Storehouse of Powerful Mantras

Lalita Sahasranama is a profound Stotram of Devi Lalita composed by her companion energies, the Vagadevis. Every name of Ma Lalita is a mantra. Their pure sounds purify Sadhakas’ minds and hearts, allowing them to experience the divine energy within. And, self-purification is the fastest way to advance toward self-realisation.

Crucial for Understanding Kundalini Sadhana

Sri Vidya Siddha and the founder of Sadhana App, Om Swami, has pointed out that Lalita Sahasranama is foundational for understanding the concept of Kundalini: ‘Before all other scriptures, commentaries, samhitas, this (Lalita Sahasranama) is where kundalini is first touched upon as the pristine formless aspect of Goddess, the primordial energy. (Om Swami, Kundalini: An Untold Story, p.16) 2016, Jaico Books.

In the verses of Lalita Sahasranama, we find the esoteric knowledge of how a Sadhak can invoke the Mother Goddess as Kundalini (the primal energy) and untie the psychic knots (granthis).

‘There are 182 verses in the Stotra, out of which 15 are directly linked to the chakras. They mention the sadhana, hidden aspects, the nature of chakras, their form, colour and syllables. But the first three verses stand independent on their own. They only talk about how the Kundalini rises as it pierces the three knots.’

(Om Swami, Kundalini: An Untold Story, Jaico 2016, p. 50-51)

Lalita Sahasranama is not just a eulogy to the Goddess but also a profound spiritual tool for self-purification and awakening to our creative potential.
