What is the significance of Lalita Sahasranaam?

Lalita Sahasranaam is a collection of a thousand names of Ma Lalita. Each name describes her divine attributes and acts as a powerful mantra. This blog post will explain the significance of Lalita Sahasranaam in spiritual practice.

Have you noticed how readily a mother responds to her child's cries? If she senses that her child is in pain, she abandons all work and rushes to him/her. Similarly, when a seeker calls Mother Divine with faith and devotion, the prayer indeed reaches her.

The names in the Lalita Sahasranaam are utterances of love and devotion—the many different ways of describing and calling out to Mother Divine. Each name helps the seeker visualise the Goddess and establish a deeper bond with her.

Found in the Brahmand Puran, Lalita Sahasranaam Stotram is a dialogue between Hayagriva (an incarnation of Sri Vishnu) and the great sage Agastya. It contains the secrets of the creation and the mystical knowledge of Sri Vidya Tantra. Performing Jap  and Yagna with the powerful Lalita Sahasranaam can help a person progress on the path of meditation, spiritual practice and self realisation.

Beautiful Descriptions Bring Deeper Connection

Each name in the Lalita Sahasranaam is an exquisite description of Mother Divine, her form (Sagun) and formless (Nirgun) aspects. When the Sadhaks understand these attributes, they can connect with Devi Ma and deepen their practice. For example, the Stotram begins with the Dhyana Shloka— a vivid physical description of Ma Lalita.

 ‘Sindurarun vigraham, trinayanam, manikya moulisphurat’

The Vagadevis tell us that Ma Lalita’s body glows vermillion-red (Sindurarun Vigraham). She is the one with three eyes—Trinayana— and sports a crown of rubies studded with a crescent moon (Manikya mouli sphurat).

With gradual practice, Lalita Sahasranaam also helps the Sadhak realise Devi Ma’s formless aspect. On completing this journey—from form to formless— the seeker’s fears melt away. He/she feels a surge of energy and a constant flow of positivity.

A Storehouse of Powerful Mantras

Lalita Sahasranaam is a profound Stotram of Devi Lalita composed by her companion energies, the Vaagdevis. Every name of Ma Lalita is a mantra. Their pure sounds purify our minds and hearts, allowing us to experience the divine energy within. And, self-purification is the fastest way to advance toward self-realisation.

Crucial for Understanding Kundalini Sadhana

Sri Vidya Siddha and the founder of Sadhana App, Om Swami, has pointed out that Lalita Sahasranaam is foundational for understanding the concept of Kundalini: ‘Before all other scriptures, commentaries, samhitas, this (Lalita Sahasranaam) is where Kundalini is first touched upon as the pristine formless aspect of Goddess, the primordial energy. (Om Swami, Kundalini: An Untold Story, p.16) 2016, Jaico Books.

In the verses of Lalita Sahasranaam, we find the esoteric knowledge of how a Sadhak can invoke the Mother Goddess as Kundalini (the primal energy) and untie the psychic knots (granthis).

‘There are 182 verses in the Stotra, out of which 15 are directly linked to the chakras. They mention the sadhana, hidden aspects, the nature of chakras, their form, colour and syllables. But the first three verses stand independent on their own. They only talk about how the Kundalini rises as it pierces the three knots.’

(Om Swami, Kundalini: An Untold Story, Jaico 2016, p. 50-51)

Lalita Sahasranaam is not just a eulogy to the Goddess but also a profound spiritual tool for self-purification and awakening to our creative potential.

Can I do this yagna now?

Khushboo September 02, 2025

Since many months, I have been listening to podcasts about Maa Tripura Sundari and texts by Adi Shankaracharya ji such as Soundarya Lahari. Last month, I started reading Soundarya Lahiri with an English translation and I am mesmerised by the description He has drawn of Maa. I am close to completion and have made several notes of the wonderful subtle meanings of it.

Sir, this attraction that I have felt towards Maa has been going on since months. I often see Sri Chakra and it all keeps coming back again and again. I also want to read Lalita Sahasranama but somehow I keep seeing messages that one should not read without guru’s initiation. I wonder if learning to call Maa by her different names can bring any bad to anyone. Bhatt sir mentioned something similar in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by1CTC5-aqs

Sir, I already have a Guruji, who is not in physical body anymore. He has taught me the most wonderful aspect of Gratitude and it has changed my life. I cannot go to some other living entity now and ask for initiation and make them my Guru, I am indebted to my Guruji already for the way He has transformed my life. Even knowing about Maa seems like a blessing from my Guru but I am a bit confused so I am writing to you today in hope that you will surely answer sir.

Can I start reading the Lalita Sahasranama a few names at a time in a day? I read the book by Om Swami ji where he mentioned the whole process of his journey to Maa, and he also learnt the whole Saharanama by learning a few names in a day. I want to do something like that. But is there any ritual I should follow or can I simply begin to read a few names with their meanings and understand them before moving on to others?

Please guide me in this matter. I will be most grateful.

P.S. Out of sheer luck, I came to know that the day I was born and the time was Lalita Maa’s panchami tithi. This I take as a sign that Maa wants me to call her as much as I want to be close to Maa :)
