Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Fasting Rituals, Puranic Story, Significance, and Rules
Bhimsen, the great warrior of the Mahabharata, was famous for his extraordinary strength and courage. It is said that he had the strength of ten thousand elephants. However, controlling his hunger was more difficult for him than fighting any battle.
Except for Bhimsen, the other Pandavas used to observe the fast on all the Ekadashis that occur in a year, but he couldn't. When he asked Maharishi Ved Vyas about the solution to this problem, he instructed Bhimsen to observe a specific fast, which is believed to provide benefits equal to all the Ekadashis of the year. This fast is Nirjala Ekadashi.
Read this blog to know the complete Puranic story of Bhimsen, the significance, fasting rituals, and the auspicious timing (Shubh Muhurat) of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast.

What is Nirjala Ekadashi?
A total of 24 Ekadashis occur in a year. Due to Adhik maas, this year we have 26 Ekadashis. Among these, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most significant. The word 'Nirjala' is derived from two Sanskrit words, 'Nir' (without) and 'Jala' (water), which translates to "without water". In this fast, people give up both food and water.
Similarly, the word ' Upvaas' (fasting) is also formed by combining two Sanskrit words, 'Up' (near) and 'Vaas' (to reside or stay close). Therefore, the deep meaning of fasting is not only giving up food, but staying close to the Divine. It provides devotees with an opportunity to detach from worldly matters and spend more time thinking, worshipping, and remembering Sri Hari Vishnu.
When is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2026?
Nirjala Ekadashi occurs every year on the Ekadashi Tithi (eleventh day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the month of Jyeshtha.
- Ekadashi Tithi Begins – June 24, 2026, at 06:12 PM.
- Ekadashi Tithi Ends – June 25, 2026, at 08:09 PM.
- Parana (Fast Breaking) Time on June 26 – 05:25 AM to 08:13 AM.
The Nirjala Ekadashi Fasting Story (Vrat Katha)

(Maharishi Ved Vyas explaining the glory of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast to Bhimsen)
The Padma Puran (Uttar Khand) and Brahma-vaivarta Puran mention about Nirjala Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is connected to the Mahabharat era. All five Pandavas (Yudhishthir, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul, and Sahadev) were supreme devotees of Sri Hari Vishnu. Except for Bhim, all the Pandav brothers and Draupadi observed all Ekadashi fasts with utmost devotion and proper rituals. However, staying hungry was extremely difficult for Bhim, the Vayu-putra, as he could not fast for more than a few hours.
Being a supreme devotee of Sri Hari Vishnu, Bhimsen felt immense guilt for not being able to fast on significant Ekadashis. Over time, his pain continued to grow. So, he approached Maharishi Ved Vyas and said, "I am unable to keep fasts, yet I want to serve Sri Hari Vishnu. Please suggest a solution."
To which he replied, "Sri Krishna, who holds the gada (mace), chakra (discus), shankh (conch), and padma (lotus) in his hands, has himself told me that the spiritual merit gained from fasting on all the Ekadashis throughout the year can be achieved by observing just this Nirjala Ekadashi fast. There is absolutely no doubt about this."
Maharishi Vyas then explained the rituals of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast to Bhimsen and advised him to observe just this single Ekadashi. He instructed Bhimsen to give up both food and water from sunrise until the next day's sunrise, and spend his time singing hymns (Bhajans), chanting (Japa), and worshipping Sri Hari Vishnu with absolute devotion.
He further explained that a person who observes this fast with devotion receives rewards equal to the merit of all Ekadashis, along with other spiritual benefits.
Bhimsen began observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast with complete faith and dedication. For this reason, this Ekadashi is famously known as Bhim Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi.
Nirjala Ekadashi Puja Vidhi (Worship Rituals)

(Devotees worshipping Sri Vishnu through the recitation of Vishnu Sahasranam and chanting of hymns)
Nirjala Ekadashi is not limited merely to giving up food and water. The completeness of this fast lies in the mantra chanting and devoted worship of Lord Vishnu. If you too wish to immerse yourself in the devotion of Sri Hari Vishnu on this auspicious Nirjala Ekadashi, his grace can be attained by participating in the three-day Vishnu Sahasranam Sadhana organised on the Sadhana App.
Step-by-step worship rituals for Nirjala Ekadashi fast:
- Wake up during Brahma Muhurta – Wake up before sunrise, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Wearing yellow or white clothes is considered auspicious, as the colour yellow is dear to Lord Vishnu.
- Take the resolve to observe the fast: Sit before the idol or image of Lord Vishnu and make the resolve for Nirjala Ekadashi. Make a promise to keep your mind focused only on Lord Vishnu. Pray, chant his name, sing hymns, and think of him constantly until you break your fast the next day on Dwadashi.
- Prepare the worship materials – Arrange puja items such as Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, Panchamrit, sandalwood paste, a ghee lamp, incense sticks, seasonal fruits, and fresh water. Tulsi and yellow flowers hold special significance in the worship of Lord Vishnu.
- Chant mantras and study scriptures – Recall the name of Lord Vishnu throughout the day. Reciting the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, chanting the Shri Krishna Mahamantra, and singing Harinam Sankirtan are considered particularly rewarding.
- Perform evening Aarti – At the time of sunset, perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu, offer Tulsi leaves, light a ghee lamp, and pray. One can also listen to the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha.
- Keep a Jagran – Stay awake during the night of Ekadashi and spend time in devotion to Sri Hari.
- Perform Parana on Dwadashi – The fast can be concluded the next day on Dwadashi Tithi at the designated time. Before ending the fast, it is considered auspicious to worship Lord Vishnu and offer charity to Brahmins, cows, or the needy according to your capacity.
Benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi
Ekadashi is the eleventh day after the full moon (Purnima) and the new moon (Amavasya). On this day, it is suggested to worship Lord Vishnu and his divine avatars through chanting (Jap) and fasting.
The rule of fasting on Ekadashi is not only limited to religious belief, but it also has a deep spiritual aspect. On this day, the energy of the Earth and nature is in a special state, which also affects the human body and mind. If a seeker keeps their body light, controls their senses, and engages their mind in the remembrance of God, their awareness naturally begins to turn inward.
For this reason, Ekadashi is considered highly favourable for self-reflection, chanting, meditation, and spiritual practices. It is said that on this day, it is easier to come closer to our inner self and experience our true spiritual nature.
But if a person remains absorbed in material pleasures and physical gratification, they fail to take advantage of this opportunity to take a temporary break from the external world and look inside to connect with the divinity within us.
Pancha pravahananyeva bhavabdhau majjtaam nrunam।
vishnuurekadashi gita tulsi vipradhenavah॥ 2,32.100॥
Garud Puran, Pretkand (Dharmkand)
The verse says that there are only 5 things that can help people drowning in the bhavsagar (ocean of worldly life): Sri Hari Vishnu, Ekadashi, Bhagavad Gita, Tulsi, and (Brahmins') cows.
Observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast with pure devotion and faith provides the following benefits:
- Mistakes of past and present lifetimes, committed knowingly or unknowingly, are forgiven.
- Past lives' karma is eliminated.
- Padma Puran mentions that at the time of death, the divine messengers of Lord Vishnu arrive to escort the devotee to Vaikuntha.
- Fasting helps direct the body's energy inward rather than on digesting heavy food, so that your inner doors open. It helps clean out toxins and waste from our bodies and also gives our digestive system a break. Hence, fasting is the best way to let our system (mentally and physically) detox regularly.
- Spending time in devotion, chanting, and spiritual practices develops mental peace, emotional balance, and control over the mind.
Which items are auspicious to donate on Nirjala Ekadashi?
In Sanatan Dharm, charity is considered an important aspect of compassion, service, and righteousness (Dharm). It becomes exceptionally rewarding during Nirjala Ekadashi. According to the scriptures, performing acts of charity and virtue alongside fasting helps in attaining the grace of Lord Vishnu. Maharishi Ved Vyas told Bhimsen that after completing the Nirjala fast, feeding the needy and Brahmins is highly auspicious.
Since this Ekadashi falls during the hottest months of the year, the significance of donating water increases even more. A person who observes a waterless fast understands the feeling of thirst, which is why serving thirsty people on this day is considered highly rewarding.
The following items can be donated on Nirjala Ekadashi:
- Water or refreshing drinks
- Earthen pots (matkas)
- Handheld fans
- Umbrellas
- Seasonal fruits
- Food and food grains
- Clothing
- Footwear
Even if donating these items is not possible, offering a glass of water to a thirsty person with deep devotion is considered highly meritorious. The true intent of Nirjala Ekadashi is not just fasting, but also doing charity and service with compassion.
