Diwali 2025: How and When to do Puja?
Shubham karoti kalyanam aarogyam dhansampada
Shatrubuddhivinashaya deepjyoti namostute
(I bow to the radiant flame of the lamp—deepam—which bestows auspiciousness, welfare, health, and wealth, and destroys the enemy’s intellect, that is, evil thoughts.)
The word ‘Deepavali’ means ‘a row of lamps.’ This festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. On the day of Deepavali, people joyfully welcome Ma Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and peace.

The significance of Laxmi Puja on Deepavali
Ma Lakshmi’s Puja is linked with the legend of the churning of the cosmic ocean, the Ksheerasagar. During the great churning, Ma Lakshmi emerged, and later on the day of Dhan Teras (the thirteenth day in the month of Ashvin), Lord Dhanvantari came out with the pot of nectar (Amrita Kalash).
After emerging from the ocean, Ma Lakshmi descended to the earthly realm on the new moon tithi (amavasya) of the Kartik month (November-December). She came to bless the creation with wealth, prosperity, and abundance, which had been lost in her absence.
From that very time, the Amavasya of Kartik month came to be celebrated as Laxmi Puja. The scriptures describe this period as Sarva-Siddhi Kaal—the most fulfilling and spiritually powerful time when the entire cosmos resonates with divine energy, and the harmonious alignment of planets and stars ensures the success of every auspicious event. Now, let’s talk about the most auspicious time for Lakshmi Pujan on Diwali.
Lakshmi Puja Muhurt (Auspicious Timing) on Deepavali
Pradosh Kaal
Pradosh Kaal is considered to be the most auspicious period to worship Ma Lakshmi. It begins after sunset and lasts for about 2 hours and 24 minutes. For householders, this is the best time to worship Maa Laxmi.
Sthir Lagna
Laxmi Puja is very beneficial when performed during Sthir Lagna, meaning fixed ascendant sign. Worshipping Ma Lakshmi during this period invites her permanent presence into your home. Vrishabh (Taurus) ascendant, generally occurring during the Pradosh Kaal on Diwali, is regarded as Sthir Lagna (fixed ascendant). That’s why this period is considered the most auspicious for Lakshmi Puja.
Mahanishith Kaal and Amrit Kaal
If a Sadhak wants to perform Sadhana, it’s best to worship Ma Lakshmi during the Mahanishith Kaal (midnight puja muhurt) and the Amrit Kaal (auspicious time during the day to do puja, or to begin sadhana or any new task). This time is especially powerful for Tantra practitioners and other scholars who know how to harness the subtle energies of this period. For general people, Pradosh Kaal and Amrit Kaal are the most auspicious periods for worship.
Importance of Sthir Lagna
Laxmi Puja is very beneficial when performed during Sthir Lagna, meaning fixed ascendant sign. Worshipping Ma Lakshmi during this period invites her permanent presence into your home. On Diwali, during the Pradosha Kaal, the Vrishabha (Taurus) Lagna usually occurs, making it a Sthir Lagna. That’s why this moment is considered the most auspicious for Lakshmi Puja.
