Rudri Sadhana | Sacred Journey with Lord Shiva

Who is Sri Rudra?

The Fierce Aspect of Lord Shiva

Rudra, Lord Shiva's fierce form, is the earliest name He is referred to in the Vedas. Derived from the Sanskrit root ‘rud’ meaning ‘to cry, howl or roar’, Rudra is associated with roaring storms and the fierce aspect with fiery red eyes.

Rig Veda (2.33) describes Rudra as the “father of the Maruts” (a group of storm Gods). The term “Rudra” is closely associated with Rudra Tāṇḍav — the dance of destruction performed by Lord Shiva.

Rudra has two forms: Ghora (intense and terrible) and Shiva or Aghora (peaceful and auspicious). Two sides of the same coin — thus, Rudra and Shiva are not two, but one.

“It is only through destruction that renewal is possible.”
