Ma Katyayani: The Divine form and Meaning

Ma Katyayani: The Divine form and Meaning

As Ma Katyayani, Devi Ma represents the divine force that cannot be seen or understood—the deep and complex secrets of Divinity. She is the cosmic force that arises to stop adharma.

Ma Katyanai manifested from the anger of the trinity. Anger is considered a negative trait, but it can be used as a positive force, too. For example, a wise person's anger helps uphold the Dharma, whereas even the love of an ignorant person can cause trouble. The anger for righteous causes, directed towards evil and injustice, is represented by Devi Katyayani. Her action restores Dharma and truth.

The Radiant Form of Ma Katyayani

The 6th manifestation of Adi Shakti (Ma Durga), Devi Katyayani, is a warrior Goddess. References to her are found in Buddhist and Jain traditions. She destroys negative tendencies, such as ego, fear, material desires, and other inner demons that obstruct our path to self-realisation. Ma Katyayani, the beautiful daughter of Maharishi Katyayan, wields a sword and a lotus in two hands. Her other two hands are raised in Abhaya and Varada Mudra (gestures for granting fearlessness and boons). In many representations, she is depicted armed with several different weapons. She sits on a ferocious lion, ready to attack and end evil forces.

Ma Katyayani’s Kundalini Connection

Devi Katyayani rules over the Agnya Chakra (located between the eyebrows), which is considered to be the seat of your inner guru. Agnya Chakra is the centre of intuition, inner vision, and the ability to perceive beyond the physical realm. You can chant Ma Katyayani’s mantra while visualising her on this chakra on the sixth day of Navdurga Sadhana.

Tantric InvocatIon of Ma Katyayani

According to the Durga Tantra and Vamkeshvara Tantra, the Tantric forms of Maa Katyayani are invoked as Malini, Mahachandi, and Durmukhi on the sixth day of Navratri. Malini and Durmukhi are part of the 64 tantric yoginis (companion energies) of Mother Divine.

The Tantric invocation of Devi Malini brings the grace of the energies of Mahalakshmi, as per the Lakshmi Tantra, a Pancharatra text. Mother Divine says,

“These are my three supreme forms, as classified by the three gunas. O Sakra (Lord Indra), during the reign of Svayambhuva (Manu), for the benefit of all worlds, I, Mahalaksmi, appeared as Mahishamardini. The elements of my shakti inherent in each god combined to constitute my beautiful form (of Mahishamardini). O king of Gods, the shaktis belonging to the special weapons of each god turned into my weapons without changing form.” (Lakshmi Tantra. )

Ma Katyayani’s tantrik mantra is beneficial for a householder for peaceful family life with material and spiritual abundance
