Spiritual and Material Gifts of Devi Mahagauri’s Sadhana
In the Durga Saptashati, Devi Ma says that anyone doing her Nitya Puja with complete focus and devotion will receive her endless blessings. The one who reflects deeply on the stories of her conquest over different asuras (Mahishasura, Chand-Mund, Shumbh-Nishumbh, and others) would be graced with her love.
Ma Durga says in Durga Saptashati that in whichever form we invoke her, she shall, with her benign presence, bless us in that very form!
The eighth day of Navadurga Sadhana is dedicated to Devi Mahagauri, whose grace restores our inner balance and peace. She is the Devi Swaroop that Ma Sita prayed to before her swayamvar. Here are some blessings that Ma Mahagauri bestows on her devotees:
- 🌸Grants beauty, grace, and all good things in life
- 🌸Removes anxiety and promotes harmonious relationships
- 🌸Grants spiritual upliftment
As Goddess Parvati married Lord Shiva after severe penance, those seeking a suitable marriage alliance, especially unmarried girls, must seek the blessings of Ma Mahagauri.
The Divine Mother is Para Prakruti. Whatever we give to the Universe, we get it back manifold. If we give money, we get money, we give love, we get love, we offer appreciation, we get appreciation, and so forth. This is the fundamental law of nature. When you give without expectations, nature gives back without condition.
What matters more to you: getting what you want or receiving what you truly need?
Is it better to be thankful for what you have or worried about what you don't? Giving makes you light. When you give, Shakti starts to work for you.
The Kundalini Connection
If you recall, Devi Shailputri, the first Nav Durga, is extremely beautiful and fair. She is also known as Gauri and her vehicle (vahana) is also a white bull. Is there a connection between Ma Shailputri and Ma Mahagauri?
In the human body, Devi Shailputri resides in the first root chakra (Muladhara) and inspires the vital energy (Kundalini) to move upwards (Urvdhvamukhi) toward Lord Shiva.
Devi Mahagauri, who resides above the Sahasrara (crown chakra), is the result of Gauri, as Ma Shailputri, evolving into Devi Mahagauri during the nine days of Nav Durga Sadhana.
The eighth day is essential for sadhana because the energy rises above the crown, and the results become clearer, depending on how much inner cleansing and transformation has happened.
On the eighth day, focus on the calm and peaceful form of Ma Mahagauri. Meditate on her in the Divya Chakra (situated 6 inches above the Sahasrara Chakra) and chant her mantra to attain oneness with Lord Shiva. Sadhana today has the power to wash away all accumulated karma (sanchit karmas) of previous lives. Seek her devotion, and she will point you in the direction of Lord Shiva. After all, she is Shivagyanpradayini (the one who bestows the knowledge of Shiva).
Tantric Invocation of Devi Mahagauri
The tantric forms of Ma Mahagauri—Vashatkarini, Vyaghramukhi, and Chatuhsashtayogini— are invoked on the eighth day of Navadurga Sadhana. Let’s look at her name ‘Vashatkarii: 'Va' means ‘this’; 'shat' is six and 'kara' means ‘one who is known as’. Vasatkarini, thus, is the one whose energy moves us through the six phases of birth, existence, growth, change, decay, and death. Every living being undergoes these six states: asti (existence), jayate (birth) vardhate (growth), vipari namate (changes), apakshiyate (decay), mriyate or vinashyati (death). Through these six stages, the Devi alone enables all beings to learn their soul lessons, repay karmic debts, evolve as a consciousness, and then merge into the higher self, who is the Devi herself.
During yagnas, when ghee is poured into the sacred fire, the word ‘Vashat’ is uttered. This name indicates that the Devi is antaryami (all-knowing) and the inner controller of all. Maha Aghori, Lord Shiva, unites with his consort, the fierce form of Devi, and releases the one performing her sadhana from the ashtamahapashas (eight great nooses or bonds). These are bonds of sense gratification, anger, greed, obsession, fear, and hatred. The Sadhak aspirant experiences her true nature and merges with Sadashiva.
May the grace of Ma Siddhidatri descend upon you!
Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah!
Nav Durga Sadhana
In the potent Nav Durga Sadhana, Devi Mahagauri is invoked on the eighth day. Devotees seek her blessings and grace to purify their minds, bodies, and souls.
The Sanskrit word ‘Durg’ means a ‘fort’. The who seeks Devi Ma is ever-protected by the strongest of forts —her grace and protection. She becomes the Sadhak’s Durg, a fort that would never fail them.
