Ma Brahmacharini’s Journey to Lord Shiv
Ma Parvati, who had immense devotion for Mahadev was shattered when he vanished after punishing Kamadev. She knew that her path ahead was no longer a gentle ascent; it was a steep climb. Yet, the daughter of the mountains had great determination, and giving up was not an option.
And so, Devi Parvati resolved to win back her Lord, not through beauty or privilege, but through the power of her tapasya. Driven by her strong will, she left her royal life behind to live a simple life as a spiritual seeker.
She discarded her royal clothes and ornaments and wore a garland of Rudraksh and tree bark. Ma Parvati sought her parents' permission and headed to the same spot where Lord Mahadev had performed penance. Her assistants, Jaya and Vijaya, accompanied her.
Ma Parvati Performs Severe Penance
On the spiritual path, Devarishi Narad became Devi Parvati’s Guru and initiated her into the Panchakshari mantra.
The Himalayan surroundings brought back memories of Lord Mahadev's penance. With tearful eyes, a heavy heart, and a firm Sankalpa, Ma Parvati began her penance. Initially, she ate simple food. Then, she shifted to fruits, and later, she would have nothing but leaves. In the end, she quit eating even leaves and thus earned the name—Aparna (The One who would not even consume leaves).
Her penance was intense. She would stand on one leg in the middle of several pyres during the hot summers. She would sit still on a rock even as rain lashed on her. She braved the cold winds and remained unmoved in her Sadhana of the Panchakshari Mantra.
In the Shiv Maha Purana, Ved Vyas describes her penance with these words:
Jigaya Tapasa Munim: The One who won over Munis and Rishis with her Tapas.
The greatest sages came to see her from far and wide. No one could match the intensity of her penance. She became the 'talk of all three worlds.' (it was trending!) Yet, her deity was unmoved. There was no sign of Lord Shiv's grace.
The First Test by Saptarishis
Her penance continued until one day when Lord Shiv thought it was time to test her.
So, he sent the Saptarishis (The Seven Sages) to speak badly about him in front of Devi Parvati.
Though unwilling, the Saptarishis obeyed Lord Shiv’s command and spoke against him, hoping to stop her from continuing her penance. She was not disturbed.
Ma Parvati explained the entire Shiv Tatva Siddhanta (the essence of Lord Shiv) to the Saptarishis. Everything that the outer world sees of Shiv has a deeper meaning, which she revealed to the Saptarishis. The Saptarishis returned to Lord Shiv, grateful that he sent them to Ma Parvati, who, unknowingly, had become their Guru.
The Divine Reunion
Now, it was time for Lord Shiv himself to test her. Wearing the disguise of an old Brahmachari, he came to Ma Parvati's sadhana sthalam (spot of penance). Meanwhile, she was upset that her penance had still not melted Lord Mahadev.
She recalled her previous life as Ma Sati when she had given up her body on hearing Shiv-ninda (criticism and condemnation of Lord Shiv). Thinking that her body was unfit to take place beside him, she lit up a pyre and walked into it. Just then, Lord Shiv appeared as an old Brahmachari. Miraculously, the fire went out, and the wood became as cool as sandalwood. Stunned, Ma Parvati got off the pyre, walked towards the old man, and said, ‘It is with your grace that the fire extinguished itself. I bow to you, O, revered Brahmachari.’
The old man replied, ‘Young lady, it looks like you are undertaking severe penance for an extraordinary thing! It is your Taposhakti (power of penance) that cooled the fire here. By the way, what is it that you are doing this for?’
Ma Parvati said, ‘I am doing this penance to attain Lord Shiv as my husband, my Lord.’
‘What a disgrace! You are such a beautiful and tender lady, and he wears bhasm (ash from funeral pyres) and is surrounded by strange creatures all the time! What a waste of your penance!’
Once again, Devi Parvati was filled with anger and sadness.
‘I wonder how you became a yogi without understanding even a little of Lord Shankar’s greatness,’ she said.
There was no sign of Lord Shiv's grace. All she got to hear was Shiv-ninda.
Sad and discouraged, she walked away to her hermitage. She was about to set foot inside when someone clasped her hand.
Devi Parvati turned around. The Lord of all Lords (Parameshwara) Mahadev stood there, beaming. Her severe penance had won Him over.
This was not just a meeting of eternal lovers but the reawakening of cosmic balance. Ma Parvati’s tapasya, her devotion, and her unwavering faith had proven that love born out of surrender and selflessness could melt even the coldest of hearts. The universe rejoiced as the eternal couple reunited, their love shining as a symbol of hope for all who seek divine blessings.
But what lies ahead? How will their union lead to the defeat of Tarakasura and restoration of Dharma? Stay tuned and read how the divine saga unfolds.
