Ma Brahmacharini and the Kundalini Connection
Ma Brahmacharini, the second Nav durga form, is honoured on the second day of Navratri. She symbolises deep devotion and intense penance. Devi Brahmacharini shows the discipline and dedication needed to elevate one’s consciousness to unite with the divine.
She is invoked with Vedic Mantras in the Swadishthana Chakra, the energy center associated with creativity and emotions. Ma Brahmacharini governs the Jal Tatva (water element): she holds a kamandala (water pot) in her left hand, representing simplicity and detachment.
Chanting her mantra with focused devotion blesses devotees, including Siddha Yogis, with divine grace, self-discipline, the spirit of sacrifice, and liberation from worldly attachments.
Ma Brahmacharini is worshipped a day after Ma Shailaputri, the first form of Navdurga. While Devi Shailaputri awakens our latent energy (Kundalini) in the root chakra (Muladhaar) and focuses our attention on Lord Shiv, Ma Brahmacharini elevates that energy. She guides us towards higher spiritual goals through devotion and hard work. Her inspiration is the foundation for our next step, the learning of Sadhana and Swadhyaya (Self-study and the study of sacred scriptures).
The Significance of Her Name
The word ‘Brahma’ signifies Supreme Divinity, while the root ‘charini’ refers to a female who moves with, moves in, or moves toward something. Thus, Ma Brahmacharini is ‘She who walks with God, journeys toward God, and is ever united with the Supreme.’
Tantric Invocation of Ma Brahmacharini
In the Tantric tradition, Ma Brahmacharini is invoked as Mahatantri, Vijaya, and Chamunda.
In her Tantric invocation, she is addressed as ‘Vagvadini’ (the goddess who inspires speech and knowledge). She bestows Sadhaks with supreme knowledge, a calm and centered mind, and mindful speech.
Offer Ma Bramacharini a sacred seat on your tongue and recite her mantra with devotion.
Her blessings guide your thoughts, actions, and words, aligning them with divine will.
May the grace of Devi Brahmacharini descend upon you, filling your heart with purity, self-discipline, and infinite wisdom.
